Trina Robbins in UWM

When I first saw Trina Robbins artwork in the pages of a Wonder Woman annual, back in the George Pérez’s era, I had no idea who she was. But I remember there was something special about her art that resonated in me.

Some years later, and after having seen quite a few documentaries about comics, I realized that Trina wasn’t just an artist, she was part of the underground movement of comic books, a social activist, a feminist and, coincidently, the first female artist to illustrate Wonder Woman comics and also the first author in America that had the courage to feature lesbian characters when it was still a taboo.

Although I never have time during the week to attend the multiple events organized by UWM, as soon as I stumbled upon the ad, next to the elevator in Curtin Hall, I immediately recognized her style. I have a pretty good memory when it comes to identifying artists just by looking at their drawings. And of course I decided to go.

Trina’s presentation took place today in the Golda Meir Library, at UWM, and it was a really interesting talk about the 9th art, about what it takes to be a creator and the historical role of women in the comic book industry. Trina was absolutely charming and funny, and she captivated the entire audience.

I love comics. I’ve always loved comics. And like I said to Trina during the reception, there is always new things and new authors to discover. Thanks to her I feel like I’ve learned about women in comics. This was a really special conference and the only thing I regret is that I didn’t have any book that she could’ve signed for me!

I’m glad to see that DC has included some of the best Alan Moore, Grant Morrison and Neil Gaiman works in the Essential Graphic Novels special, but there’s a lot of crap there too, although the good outweighs the bad. I had so much fun reading The Pro, I love Garth Ennis and his irreverence. Vertigo has two new titles: The Wake and Astro City, and they’re both really, really good. I’ll wait till I read the next issues before reviewing them. The conclusion of Gillen and McKelvie’s first arc on Young Avengers was so brilliant. And I’m glad I ordered the reprint of Phonogram, Gillen and McKelvie create something so unique, and at the same time so British and so full of wild ideas, I wish I could’ve picked up this series 7 years ago. Fashion Beast ends and The Bounce begins, but if I had to choose the best comic of the month the award would go to Kick-Ass 3 # 1. What a great first chapter! Millar has done it again. Have you read it? And if you haven’t, what are you waiting for? (in case anyone’s keeping count of the “best of”, in May we had Jupiter’s Legacy # 1 and Young Avengers # 4; in April, Uncanny Avengers # 5 and FF # 4; In March, Young Avengers # 2; in February, Invincible # 100 and Young Avengers # 1; in January, Secret Service # 5). Me divertí tanto leyendo The Pro, me encanta Garth Ennis y su irreverencia.
